High Returns Even in a Sideways Market?

When investing in stocks, risk management is important.
I will explain something that may be a bit difficult for beginners.
Risk management can include diversifying investments across several stocks, but since in most cases the market's direction cannot be predicted accurately, risk is managed by running hedge trades alongside.
Among the products that invest using the principle of hedge trading is the Covered Call.
The covered call strategy is generally used to earn additional income on assets you hold when the stock's upside is expected to be limited.
Because of this nature, covered calls can deliver high returns when the market moves sideways.
A covered call is a strategy of selling a call option on an asset while holding the stock or asset.
(There are two types of options: call options and put options. A covered call is a product that trades call options. That is why the product is called a covered call.) In other words, it is a method of selling a call option to receive a premium (the sale amount).

# Components of a Covered Call:
Holding the asset: You must first hold the stock.
Selling a call option: Sell a call option linked to the stock you hold, with a set price (strike price) and expiration date.
Receiving the option premium: By selling the call option, you take the option premium (sale amount) as income.

Let's look at an example.
1. Assume you hold stock A, whose current price is 10,000 won.
2. You set the strike price for stock A at 11,000 won and sell a call option that expires in 1 month. (A call option is the right to buy at a set price)
3. Since you sold this call option, you receive 1,000 won as the sale amount (premium).
4. If the stock price rises to 11,000 won or more before the expiration date, the call option you sold is exercised and you must sell the stock at 11,000 won.
However, since you have already received the 1,000 won premium, even if you sell at 11,000 won, it is the same as selling at 12,000 won (11,000 won + 1,000 won).
If the stock does not rise to 11,000 won or more, the call option is not exercised, so you keep the entire 1,000 won premium as profit.

-Advantages of Covered Calls
Additional income: Even when the market is failing to rise, you can receive a premium by selling call options on the assets you hold.
Reduced risk when stocks fall: The premium from selling call options can offset part of the loss from a decline in the asset.

-Disadvantages of Covered Calls
Limited upside potential: If the stock rises above the call option's strike price, you cannot gain from the additional rise. (A loss occurs because you must sell the stock at the call option's strike price)

If you are considering a diversified portfolio, products like covered calls can be a good alternative.
