You Can Trade U.S. Stocks During the Day?

This time, we will explain the U.S. stock daytime trading service in detail.

What is the U.S. stock daytime trading service?
- It is a service that allows Korean investors to trade U.S. stocks domestically from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Korea time (with daylight saving time applied).
The U.S. stock daytime trading service is offered by domestic securities firms through a Korean fintech company called Blue Ocean.

What are the features of this service?
- It offers investors convenience by letting them trade right away from Korea during the Korean daytime, when the regular U.S. market is closed.
- Since U.S. stocks can be bought and sold during the Korean daytime, investors can invest after work or on holidays.

Which domestic securities firms offer this service?
- Currently, Kyobo Securities, Daishin Securities, Meritz Securities, Mirae Asset Securities, Samsung Securities, Shinhan Securities, Yuanta Securities, Eugene Investment & Securities, Kakao Pay Securities, Kiwoom Securities, Toss Securities, Hana Securities, Korea Investment & Securities, Hanwha Investment & Securities, iM Securities (formerly Hi Investment & Securities), KB Securities, LS Securities and NH Investment & Securities offer the service.

How can I trade during the daytime?
-The U.S. stock daytime trading service has been suspended since August 16, 2024.
- It is reported that a decision on whether to resume the service will be made once the stability of Blue Ocean's system is confirmed.

Why was the service suspended?
- On August 5, 2024, when global stock markets plunged, Blue Ocean cited a problem with its system and canceled all trades executed after 2:45 p.m.
As a result, all trades made after that time were voided. The voided trades amounted to about 630 billion won (about 90,000 accounts).
- The Korea Financial Investment Association reportedly decided to suspend the service to protect investors.
- It is reported that resuming the service will be reviewed once Blue Ocean establishes measures to prevent a recurrence and the stability of its system is verified.
