HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering's 3 Trillion Won Fundraising and the MASGA Project: Analysis Report

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering's 3 Trillion Won Fundraising and the MASGA Project: Analysis Report

Market summary and analysis

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai's intermediate holding company for shipbuilding, has disclosed an issue of exchangeable bonds worth up to 2 billion dollars, or about 3 trillion won, using a 5.35% stake in its subsidiary HD Hyundai Heavy Industries as the underlying asset.

This fundraising, with an exceptionally low interest rate of under 1% and an exchange premium of 12.5-17.5%, directly reflects the market's strong expectations for the shipbuilding industry, which has now entered a supercycle.

Key investment targets of the large-scale fundraising

The 3 trillion won in ammunition secured will be focused on completing HD Hyundai's future growth engines.

It will be used to build an eco-friendly ship value chain — including SMRs (small modular reactors), hydrogen fuel cells and offshore wind, considered next-generation energy sources — as well as to expand production facilities at overseas shipyards.

Most notably, it will serve as mid-to-long-term funding for MASGA (a shipbuilding cooperation project), a key security project for both Korea and the U.S.

Implications from an investor's perspective

Investors should pay attention to the signal that HD Hyundai Group is stepping up its entry into the U.S. defense market.

It is currently building solid trust and a track record locally through MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) work on U.S. Navy vessels,

and building on this, it is expected to secure a firm advantage in large-scale order competitions such as the MASGA project.

This 3 trillion won fundraising goes beyond a simple financial decision; it is a preemptive bet to seize global maritime supremacy, so a strong rerating of the corporate value of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and its related value chain is expected going forward.
