Samsung Electronics' 110 Trillion Won Investment Gamble and Strengthening Leadership in AI Semiconductors: Analysis Report

Market situation summary and analysis

Samsung Electronics is moving to secure leadership in AI semiconductors by investing more than 110 trillion won in facilities and R&D this year, the largest amount since its founding.

This is a 21.6% increase from the previous year and is interpreted as a strong commitment to maintaining a super-gap lead and shaping the market landscape in line with the global AI semiconductor super cycle.

Dominating the HBM market and expanding foundry orders

The core goal of the expanded investment is firm dominance of the high-value-added memory market.

Following its world-first supply of HBM4 to industry leader NVIDIA, Samsung Electronics also achieved the feat of being selected as a priority HBM4 supplier by AMD, NVIDIA's key competitor.

In the foundry division as well, it is diversifying its customer base to global big tech companies such as Tesla and Google on the strength of its advanced processes, signaling entry into a full-fledged upcycle.

Future investment direction and building production bases

This massive 110 trillion won investment will be concentrated mainly on building infrastructure at key production bases.

In Korea, funds will go into Pyeongtaek Line 5, set to begin full operation in 2028, and the Yongin semiconductor cluster, with plans to develop Pyeongtaek into a global semiconductor production base.

Overseas, through investment in its fab in Taylor in the U.S., it plans to begin full-scale mass production of advanced AI chips for Tesla and others from the second half of next year.

Implications from an investor's perspective

Investors should pay attention to the value chain competitiveness of Samsung Electronics as the world's only integrated semiconductor company covering memory, foundry and advanced packaging.

As the global AI era takes off and medium- to long-term demand for HBM and other products surges, this preemptive 110 trillion won investment will go beyond short-term good news to become a powerful momentum driving a medium- to long-term re-rating of the company's value.
